Moats today is one of the highly decorative terms used by analysts to get a deeper understanding about the competitive advantage of a company. This help analysts to understand the competitive landscape of the particular sector and the differentiating factor of the company which is being analyzed. But the evolution of word Moat is really interesting and not the one we could have imagined.

"Moats" has been in use and evolved since the ancient civilization's way back to Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, and even Chinese. Initially the word moat was used in context of defense. Moats were essentially a deep and wide trench around the rampart of a fortified place, such as castle, usually filled with water to provide defense.

This made it difficult for siege weapons like rams to attack the fortress, providing a physical barrier against invaders. Moats acted as a visual reminder of the owner's strength and intimidated the enemies.

Later, in the Tudor period, between 1485 and 1603, as advancements in military technology happened with rise in artillery, it reduced the effectiveness of these moats.

During this period, the role of moats began to shift. Castles and Empires were no longer solely focused on defense but also incorporated aesthetic elements. It then continued to serve as symbols of wealth and power. In summary, during the Tudor period, moats in England transitioned from military defenses to important historical landmark with aesthetic and recreational significance.

In modern times, the concept of moat has been adapted to business strategy, where a "moat" refers to a sustainable competitive advantage that protects the company from competitors, the same way it protected the castles before. This concept was initially popularized by Warren Buffet and then later developed by Morning star as economic moat framework.
